What's it all about?

Cocos Islands is located 2,790kms NW of Perth and part of Australia's Indian Ocean Territories. We have a total population of 650 people (550 are Cocos Malay Australians).

The Islands import approximately 95% of it's fresh fruit and vegetable requirements from Perth. The additional freight rate is approximately $6/kg on top of the retail price, making living extremely expensive and less attractive to consume due to price, hence the poor health in our community, however we hope to change all that.

Our small group of 'gourmet' farmers act as a collective and together we aim to grow more local food for local consumers and to enable us to operate financially, we aim to export dried products that will then enable job opportunities, as the rate is now up to 45% unemployment. A new range of gourmet Cocos Islands Sea Salt and Herbs has recently been released for mainland Australian Stores.

It's certainly a challenge as there is no organic matter on the islands, only sand! We have setup a small worm farm that the community green waste goes to. Also looking into utilising biosolids. Water is not a problem as on average rainfall is 1800mm and there are fresh water lens below the sand for irrigation. The farm hope to engage an organic auditor within the next 6 months and start adopting biodynamics within 12 months.
